Our New Hive

New Centre Opening February 2017

What started 30 years ago as a travelling science show from the back of a van, has now grown to the largest science centre in Atlantic Canada and one of the region’s most loved family institutions. The Discovery Centre has been a pillar of scientific discovery in Nova Scotia, pollinating 1.4 million minds by reinforcing curiosity, knowledge and innovation. But today, we are on the precipice of something monumental. We are building a new, state-of-the-art Discovery Centre. The seed was planted with a tremendous gift from Nova Scotia Power – over 40,000 square feet of space in their corporate headquarters on the Halifax waterfront and title sponsorship of the new Energy Gallery.

At over 40,000 square feet, the New Discovery Centre will include four floors of exhibit and programming space. The Centre will be home to five marquee galleries – Water, Energy, Flight, Health and Creative Kids – as well as a huge new Travelling Exhibit Gallery, Atrium, Innovation Lab and an Immersive Dome Theatre – the first of its kind in Eastern Canada. These spaces will all work together to provide an unprecedented educational and cultural experience.

Programming capacity for our Educational Outreach programs Science in the Centre and Science on the Road will also increase, giving us even more opportunity to deliver our award-winning, informal experiential education programs across Nova Scotia.

Welcome to the changing face of science in Nova Scotia. Welcome to the New Discovery Centre.

To open in February 2017 at 1215 Lower Water Street, Halifax, NS.
